HUBO-2 Plus, from Rainbow Robotics, is the mass-produced commercial version of KAIST's HUBO-2 (KHR-4) — notable as the world's first commercialized full-size humanoid robot platform. Standing 1,250 mm and 45 kg with 40 DOF (3-DOF neck, dual 7-DOF arms, dual 5-DOF hands, 1-DOF torso, dual 6-DOF legs), it upgraded the original HUBO with 40 Maxon brushless DC motors and harmonic-drive reducers on an aluminium endoskeleton with polycarbonate frame, running real-time control on two PC/104 computers (dual Pentium III, Windows XP with Ardence RTX). It can walk, run and dance, imitate human sign language with five independently-moving fingers, and recognise faces/objects via two CCD head cameras. By 2012 Rainbow had produced 15 units — four for domestic Korean teams and eleven exported to research groups in the United States, Japan, Singapore and China — cementing HUBO as a global research platform. Its lineage led to the DARPA-winning DRC-HUBO+ and the rideable FX-2. Rainbow Robotics was later acquired by Samsung Electronics (2025).
