WALK-MAN

IIT · Humanoid · 2017

WALK-MAN, from the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT), is a rugged full-size disaster-response research humanoid developed under an EU project launched in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear accident to explore humanoids that could intervene in hazardous, human-engineered environments. Standing about 1.85 m and 100 kg with roughly 33 DOF, it uses high-power series-elastic, torque-controlled actuators for compliant, forceful whole-body motion, with a stereo/depth perception head, force-torque sensing and an IMU. It was demonstrated performing DARPA-Robotics-Challenge-class tasks: walking over rubble, turning valves, removing debris, drilling and operating equipment in damaged settings. WALK-MAN advanced IIT's expertise in powerful compliant actuation that later fed into the institute's broader humanoid work. NOTE: specs from IIT/EU WALK-MAN project publications; verified research-grade figures, some flagged where sources vary.
