Honda's P3, completed September 1997, is considered the world's first completely independent (fully self-contained) bipedal humanoid walking robot — the final prototype before ASIMO. Honda shrank it substantially from the P2: 1,600 mm and 130 kg (down from 210 kg) with 28 degrees of freedom, achieved by revising component materials and adopting a distributed control system, bringing it closer to a size that could blend into human living spaces. It walked autonomously at 2 km/h, climbed stairs, and pushed carts. The P3 was the direct bridge to ASIMO (2000), and its lineage also seeded AIST's HRP-1.
