Rollin' Justin, from the German Aerospace Center (DLR), is a landmark mobile-manipulation research humanoid: a torque-controlled humanoid upper body — two 7-DOF DLR-Lightweight-Robot-III arms, two dexterous DLR-Hand-II hands and a 3-DOF movable torso — mounted on an omnidirectional wheeled platform with a variable, extendable base. The whole system weighs 199 kg and rolls on four independent hub-motor steering wheels (30 N·m each, 1.5 m/s, climbing 40 mm steps and 17° ramps). Its defining technology is DLR's modular drive concept: brushless-DC motors with harmonic-drive gears and link-side joint torque sensors on every joint, giving back-drivable behaviour and highly sensitive impedance control — the basis for safe physical interaction with people and delicate two-armed manipulation (famously demonstrated serving tea). It's a premier platform for autonomous dexterous mobile manipulation in human environments, with envisioned use in households and space (astronaut assistance), and sits in DLR's humanoid family alongside Agile Justin, the biped TORO and neoDavid.
