The original Atlas (2013) was built by Boston Dynamics for the DARPA Robotics Challenge — a ~1.88m, 150kg hydraulic humanoid designed for search-and-rescue tasks in disaster environments (driving, valve-turning, debris clearing). Initially tethered to external power, it was the first-generation Atlas that evolved into the untethered Atlas HD.
