Alex, from Boardwalk Robotics (Pensacola, Florida), is a 19-DOF upper-body manipulation humanoid unveiled August 2024 — deliberately legless, mounting on a stable or mobile base to prioritise safety and high-speed dexterity over bipedal locomotion. Its custom in-house actuators drive rapid joints at up to 9 rad/s with a 10 kg continuous payload, paired with vision and force sensing and onboard real-time control, for tasks like cleaning, organizing, pick-and-place and factory work. Boardwalk developed Alex's manipulation systems leveraging its collaboration with the Institute for Human Machine Cognition (IHMC), renowned for bipedal robotics (the two also built the Nadia research humanoid together). In December 2024 Foundation Robotics acquired Boardwalk, inheriting the engineering team and the Alex hardware — which was rebranded and further developed into the Foundation Phantom MK1, with Boardwalk's years of cycloidal-actuator work becoming Phantom's core differentiator.
