Geminoid F ('F' for female), unveiled in 2010 by roboticist Hiroshi Ishiguro (ATR and Osaka University) with animatronics firm Kokoro, is one of the world's most famous ultra-realistic androids — a copy of a real woman in her twenties, with silicone skin and real human hair over a fiber-reinforced-plastic skull. Its design breakthrough was efficiency: where the earlier Geminoid HI-1 (Ishiguro's own copy) used about 50 actuators and a large external compressor box, Geminoid F achieves a convincing 'toothy' smile and a frown with just 12 pneumatic actuators concentrated in the face. It autonomously breathes and blinks, but to fully 'come alive' it's teleoperated: motion-capture software tracks a human operator's facial expressions and head movements and mimics them on the android in real time. It cannot walk — it's always seated — and exists to study human-robot interaction and the nature of 'human presence,' even appearing in theatre productions. It sits within Ishiguro's celebrated android family (Geminoid HI series, Repliee Q1/Q2, Telenoid, Erica).
