HRP-5P, unveiled by AIST in 2018, is the strongest and most autonomous member of Japan's HRP humanoid series — a prototype construction robot built to take on heavy, hazardous building labour amid Japan's shrinking workforce. At 1,820 mm and 101 kg with 37 DOF (the most in the HRP series: 2 neck, 3 waist, 8 per arm, 6 per leg, 2 per hand), it uses high-power motors — several per joint on heavy-load axes — to autonomously locate, lift and carry large drywall/plaster panels and screw them to walls with power tools. A 3D head sensor maps its surroundings for object detection and navigation. AIST shed the futuristic shells of earlier HRP robots for a purely functional industrial body, positioning HRP-5P as an industry-academia R&D platform for practical humanoid use in constructing buildings and large structures like aircraft and ships.
