Philae

Philae

ESA · Aerospace · 2014

First spacecraft to soft-land on a comet. Released by the Rosetta orbiter onto Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on 12 November 2014. Harpoons failed to fire on landing, causing Philae to bounce twice and come to rest in a shadowed location ~1 km from intended site. Operated intermittently on battery power for ~60 hours before going silent; briefly re-established contact in mid-2015.
