Volocopter · Drones · 2019
Volocopter's flagship air taxi and the aircraft it has taken furthest toward certification - the fifth-generation design first unveiled in 2019. Its signature 18 electrically driven rotors sit on a circular frame above a two-seat cabin (one pilot plus one passenger), all-electric on nine swappable battery packs. It's built for short urban hops: ~35 km range at a 90 km/h cruise within a ~900 kg max takeoff mass, and it's about four times quieter than a small helicopter because all 18 rotors run in a narrow frequency band that largely cancels out. Multiple redundant systems (rotors, motors, batteries, avionics and displays all at least doubled) and fly-by-wire controls - piloted first, autonomous later - back its safety case, and it's being certified in EASA's demanding SC-VTOL 'enhanced' category (Design Organisation Approval already earned, type certification in progress) after 2,000+ test flights in cities like Hamburg, Dubai, Singapore and Paris. Development continues under new owner Diamond Aircraft (Wanfeng).
