RB Robot Corporation · Educational · 1983
A cylindrical, R2-D2-esque personal robot from RB Robot Corporation (Golden, Colorado; founded by Joe Bosworth in 1982) — one of the earliest commercial autonomous mobile robots and among the most durable personal robots of the 1980s (still manufactured today by RB Robotics). Under a clear domed top, RB5X runs a National INS8073 microprocessor with on-chip TinyBASIC and 8K of memory (expandable to 16K), programmable in TinyBASIC or Savvy and downloadable from any home computer over its (dual) RS-232 interface. It rolls at ~4 in/sec on two drive wheels and two casters, sensing the world with eight perimeter bump panels, a photodiode and a Polaroid sonar rangefinder (10 in to 35 ft). It learns from experience, finds its own charging nest when low, and offers an optional five-axis arm (lifts ~1 lb) and voice synthesizer. Sold in Germany as 'Toby'.
