The Nuro R2 was the first vehicle granted a USDOT/NHTSA self-driving exemption (no mirrors, pedals or steering wheel), debuting in Houston in 2020. A narrow, passengerless electric delivery pod (1150 kg, ~190 kg payload), it carries food, groceries and parcels at up to 40 km/h with a 360-degree suite of 12 cameras, top lidar plus 14 side lidars, dual IMUs and ultrasonics, with heating/cooling cargo bays.
