Joby Aviation · Drones · 2015
Joby's flagship battery-electric air taxi, the production-prototype S4 (FAA type designation JAS4-1). It's a tilt-rotor eVTOL with six tilting propellers driven by dual-wound electric motors, carrying a pilot plus four passengers at up to ~200 mph over roughly 100 miles (including reserves) while staying notably quiet. Public/regulatory figures put empty weight around 1,950 kg, useful payload near 454 kg, and FAA maximum gross takeoff weight at 2,177 kg (rotor diameter ~2.9 m is a best-available estimate). It flies on Joby's ElevateOS operating software and is one of the furthest-along aircraft in FAA type certification - reaching Type Inspection Authorization in late 2025 and beginning flight testing of its first FAA-conforming aircraft in 2026 - backed by investors including Toyota, Delta, Uber and SK Telecom, with an early launch planned in Dubai.
