The Franka Research 3 (FR3) is the reference force-sensitive robot of the AI and robot-learning research world — the successor to the Franka Emika Panda, engineered and made in Germany, and adopted by leading universities and labs worldwide. Its foundation is a 7-DoF torque-controlled arm with a link-side torque sensor in every joint, giving fine estimation of external contact forces, compliant hand-guiding at ~2.5 N, and the sensitivity to be stopped by a balloon. The 3 kg / 855 mm arm (17.8 kg, IP40) exposes both easy and deep control: the browser-based Desk UI with no-code Apps for rapid setup, and the 1 kHz Franka Control Interface (FCI) via libfranka for real-time torque control that made it the standard research platform — with official franka_ros/ros2 and MATLAB/Simulink integration. It's TÜV SÜD-certified to PL d Cat. 3 with a full safe-motion function set (SLP, SLS, SLD, SEEPO), runs from a compact 80 W controller, and continuously improves via free OTA system images. Franka Hand and vacuum grippers integrate plug-and-use.
