BigDog (2005) was Boston Dynamics' pioneering DARPA-funded rough-terrain quadruped — a gasoline-powered, hydraulically actuated robot the size of a large dog, designed to carry ~150kg of load for soldiers over terrain too rough for wheeled vehicles. It could recover balance on ice and slopes and became one of the most famous early legged robots, laying the groundwork for LS3 and later Spot.
